One-Piece Takeaway

You want to learn the swing in the sequence in which it happens.  Learn the grip first, then the set-up then the swing starting with the Take-Away.

Most golf instructors advocate a one-piece takeaway to combat the tendency by many players to set or cock their wrists too early in the swing. The Perfect Pendulum helps you reverse that trend and start your swing in a power position.

Make a practice station by utilizing a straight line to indicate your ball line.  A simple line in the floor (like those on a kitchen floor tile) or a piece of masking tape works great.  Place a marker on that line to indicate your ball.  Mount the Perfect Pendulum on a short club (or just a shaft with a grip will do) and extend the length (as far as possible without touching your body at address).

Step (1)

From the address position, practice a one piece take-away feeling as though you are pushing back down the ball line with your left shoulder rotating around your spine.  The Perfect Pendulum extension should stay just along the inside of the lead arm with the club head staying on the ball line until your hands are over your rear foot.   Your wrists should not be cocking at this point.  Do this in ultra slow motion.  You are trying to teach yourself the feeling of the correct move.  Let your muscles feel the move.   If this is done too fast you will never feel what should be happening.

Key:  Do not rush it.  Practice this move alone at least 20-25 times before moving on to step (2).  After you have done this try it with your eyes closed without opening them until you have stopped in what you feel is the end of the take-away position.  If you are in the proper position when you open your eyes you have started to internalize the feel.  You are now ready to move on.

Build A Better Swing

The Perfect Pendulum provides the best flexibility as a training aid you will ever find.  You do not need to hit golf balls to develop a golf swing.  That is, at least not until after you have built a solid foundation of the golf swing.  How do you do that?  Start by working on your swing away from the driving range by attaching the Perfect Pendulum to a short (even cut off) club.  While at home or office, practice using the Perfect Pendulum.  Take your set-up swing in super slow motion.  This allows  you to easily check the position of your club throughout your swing and perform drills to build consistency into your swing without the thought process of,  “How was that shot?” or “What did  that ball go?”.   After you can position the club properly and swing smoothly through them comfortably and confidently without thinking, go hit balls.  You will be amazed at the results.  The Perfect Pendulum will help build a solid and confident swing you can trust without ever hitting a single ball!

Swing Path

You no longer have to wonder if you are coming at the ball from the inside-out, outside-in or right down the line. The Perfect Pendulum allows you to see the proper position and timing of the swing both going through the back swing and down to impact and follow through.

Step (2)

Always start from the set-up position.  You are now going to start step one again but this time continuing the rotation around your spine until the club is parallel to the ground and the ball line.  The Perfect Pendulum should not be pointing down a parallel path.  If it points outside the ball line the club is being brought too far inside the line and the proverbial duck hook or straight push is likely.  If it points to the inside of the ball line the club is being taken outside setting up for an outside/in swing and a dead pull or slice is likely to be your final outcome.  Pointing upward indicates a lack of wrist cock while pointing downward would indicate excessive hand action.  When in the proper position the ball line, club line and toe line should all be parallel with each other and the toe of the club facing straight up and the rear arm just starting to fold against your side.

As in step one, do this at super slow motion.  Practice getting into the proper position at least 20-25 times.  Then, as before, close your eyes and attempt to get into the parallel club position.  When all is good when you open your eyes and no correction is needed you are ready to move onto the next step.

Swing Plane

With the use of your practice station floor alignment reference lines you will be able to see if your club is on the plane you intended.  The Perfect Pendulum becomes an extension of the butt end of the club so you can see the plane of the swing.

Step (3)

Take your address as usual.  Start by slowly moving through each step.  Starting with the take-away then to parallel.  Do each several times with your eyes closed to  build confidence.  Once in the parallel position continue turning allowing your hips to rotate until your lead arm is now parallel to the ground and aligned with the toe line.  As you move from step 2 position allow your wrists to cock until the Perfect Pendulum is pointing at the ball line.  If it points outside the ball line your swing is likely too upright, inside too flat.  Both of these positions will either open or close the face relative to your spine angle.  Doing either makes it difficult to return the club face square to the ball line at impact.  Though many pro golfers do this (Jim Furyk, upright / Paul Azinger, flat) they need to literally thousands of golf balls in practice to engrain the timing needed for their swings to perform.   By using this single plane approach most amateurs would drastically improve their game.

As before, when you can put yourself in the proper position with the extension pointing at the ball line with your eyes closed you are ready.  Again, with the Perfect Pendulum you can build a solid, repeatable  confidence building golf swing that will lower your score and increase your golfing enjoyment.

Step (4)

From this position, continue to rotate the shoulders until you have reached what is your full swing.  The ideal full swing would have the club back to parallel both with the ground and the ball line.  This one is tough to judge on your own without a mirror set behind you looking back down the target line.  However, you may net be able to reach this ideal position.  It is better to use a three quarter swing and stay on plane than to attempt to swing beyond your true capability and get out of position.  Going too far has a tendency to force the “over-the-top” swing producing slices and dead pulls.  By maintaining the proper swing plane coming down you will achieve crisper shots.   The Perfect Pendulum will show this position when again the it is pointing at the ball line.

Step (5)

As you swing down you should get to the parallel position you achieved in step (2) except now your hips have turned open and weight is now on the left side.  This position helps you maintain “the angle” as long as possible creating more power in the shot and better accuracy.

At Impact:

Continue to learn these positions at super slow motion.  Moving to the impact position should place the club face square to the ball line and find the extension of the Perfect Pendulum pointing just outside your leading hip with your hips open and arms extended.

Follow Through:

Continuing to rotate through impact, keep your head behind the ball.  Your arms will naturally roll over through the impact zine and should carry straight through.  When the club is parallel to the ground it should also be parallel to the target line straight out in front of you with the Perfect Pendulum aiming straight back at your belly.  If it is pointing outside the line your ball flight will likely be a cut where pointing to the inside would indicate a draw or hook.   Now just let momentum finish your swing with relaxed muscles.

Practicing these moves in an ultra slow, smooth motion will give you the opportunity to feel it when it is right.  With your eyes closed and hitting those positions your confidence will build quickly.

Keep your Perfect Pendulum in your bag.  Take it to the practice green, the shipping area and the driving range.  Use it during practice to play shots.  You will be amazed how such a device, so small, so inexpensive can improve your golf game so much.
